Interview With Dave Rose
![]() ![]() 1. How did you fell when you lost series 3, after puting all that time and money into your robot ?
Obviously we were a little dissapointed to lose at the very last stage, but we certainly got much further that we could have ever imagined.
2. Is there any thing in particular that made you loss series 3 ?
Overall we lost due to meeting the best robot in the comeptition ! and reliability of drive gears/ components.
3. Are there any things you would change on your robot to make it better ?
See the series 4 Hypno-Disc ! Can't say any more than that.
4. How did you get intressed in robot wars?
Watched the program and thought 'I could do that'.
5. What is the toughest match you' ve ever been in ?
Hypno v Steg-o-Saw-us. We were quite beat up after that match. Again not counting series 4.
6. Did your son Matthew design the lego for robot wars or did you just think of it ?
More of parallel design ending up on the same point.
7. What did you think of your weapon when it thrashed strenlth ?
Phew, that worked well !!!!
8. Why did your disc not spin when it got caught in chaos 2's flipper ? I thought you had won
The disc was spinning when the flipper was up, just not going fast enough to damage it.
9. What were you thinking when the judges were making their decision, in the fight between you and 101 ?
Humm...this could go any way. The judges gave it to us on damage, though not by much.
![]() 10. Will you be coming back in series 5 ?
Probably yes. We will see what happens after the screening of series 4.
![]() These questions were greatfully anwsered by Dave Rose the Hypno-discs team captain, and I would just like to say a big thank you to him for making this site special.
![]() ![]() 1. What was your favourate or most memorable fight ?
Favourite fight (which I can tell you about - there are ones we have already filmed this year which are better) would be our Series 4 clash with Milly-Ann Bug. It was real fun and we created a lot of entertainment without damaging the expensive bits of our opponent. The crowd loved it every time another wheel came off!
2. What was going through your head when you were being chopped to peices in the fight between pussycat and you ?
Hmm, we were more upset about going out to a breakdown rather than the damage PC inflicted after we were immobilised (which was a mere 12 seconds into the fight!). We have every confidence we will be the bot that stops PC in its tracks if we meet again. Beating up a dead Razer was easy, but next time. . .
3. Is there a change you would like to make to Razer but can't because of the weight limit ?
The new 100kg limit has allowed us to add the new front end that was always intended so for S5, Razer will be as good as it will ever be (see the 2001 pics where there is a description of this years alterations).
4. I'm sure you are nervous but has there been a Robot that you knew has trashed other robots that made you and the team particulary nervous ?
We don't really get that nervous as we have fought so many top class battles and won a high percentage. As long as you don't become arrogant about it, you must have confidence in yourself and your machine if you are to win tournaments. What we do get is excited - at the earls Court events this year we had the whole crowd chanting our name and it gives you a terrific thrill.
5. Your team has won many competitions so therefore you have loades of trophies who exactly gets to keep them ?
We share the trophies between us and swap them round every few months.
6. What and who was the idea behind Razer ?
Ian and Simon both wanted a machine capable of utterly crippling an opponent and a crusher was the design they chose - and a wise choice it has proven to be.
7. Personally I think Razer is one of the best Robots in the competition. But what are rest of the teams reactions when their robot get thrashed ?
Some teams do seem a bit upset but in general they know that there is always the risk of a pounding. We do hold back in most of our fights once we know we have won. It is not only the gentlemanly thing to do, it also saves your own machine from excessive wear and tear.
8. I have heard than whenever you where a kid you built a crusher to crush dinky cars. Breafly explain how that worked ?
The Dinky toy crusher consisted of 2 breeze blocks - simply place the car on top of one and then drop the other on top of it! Not good if you want to keep a nice collection of cars though.
9. Have you made any improvments on your Robot for Series 5
See the 2001 page on the Razer site
10. Your robot uses skid steering and is a very difficult type of steering what does your driver Ian Lewis think about it.
Ian does the driving and it is actually an easy machine to drive. We have an electronic gyro which calms the steering and the 'steering wheel' control is actually easier to master than a stick. I have driven Razer a few times and it great fun once you have got used to it.
These questions were greatfully anwsered by Vincent Blood out of Team Razer, and I would just like to say a big thank you to him for making this site special.
